Recent cases in the Harrisburg area have emphasized the incredible cost of caring for the victims of animal cruelty. The Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area, still holding 27 horses seized from a neglect case in Hershey, PA in January 2013 estimates a price tag of more than $70,000 thus far in boarding, feed, and veterinary costs. The defendant in the case Rebecca Roberts was convicted of animal cruelty in May 2013, however, she has refused to relinquish the horses and intends to appeal the conviction so the horses must be maintained as evidence at enormous cost to the non-profit.
