In 1985, James Nichols, who lived with his wife, Joan, 55, at 720 Vassar Road in Poughkeepsie, NY called the police to report his wife missing on December 21. JoAnn was a first-grade teacher at the Gayhead Elementary School in Hopewell Junction and although it would be unlike her to just disappear, authorities thought she may have been despondent over the loss of her own adult child that drowned three years prior, and could have committed suicide.
